Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
