Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
