Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
